Durham

durhamBoasting a rich history, Durham is one of the finest cultural and historic destinations in the UK.

Set against spectacular architecture and some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside, Durham offers a lively and cosmopolitan student scene. With an impressive mix of cafés, bars, clubs and boutiques, Durham is a great place to eat, shop and party!

A captivating city with stunning scenery, a vibrant culture and fantastic nightlife; what more could a student ask for?

Entertainment

Whether you’re an undergraduate, postgraduate or an International student, Durham has it all.

It may appear to be a small and quiet city but there is plenty to see and do. With a great choice of entertainment both in and around the city and only a short train ride from Newcastle city centre, you'll never be short of something to do. Here are a few of our favourites:

  • Durham Castle – Durham Castle is located right next to the University and is in fact home to 100 students from the University. It is great to visit for those students interested in the history of the city and guided tours are offered. It is completely free to visit.
  • Durham Cathedral – One of the great buildings of Europe, this World Heritage Site is set grandly on a rocky promontory next to the Castle with the medieval city huddled below and the river sweeping round.
  • Durham University Botanic Gardens – These beautiful botanic gardens are open to the public and students alike. With student discount, the tickets can cost as little as £1.50!
  • Prince Bishop River Cruiser – Take a cruise down the river in Durham’s city centre. The Prince Bishop River Cruiser offers cruises with spectacular views of historic Durham City, Cathedral, Castle and Bridges and evening cruises with a difference twelve months of the year.
  • Seasonal Attractions – There is plenty going on in Durham throughout the year. There is a Christmas market and lots going on at bonfire night. Look out for posters nearer to the date to see what is going on.

Transport

Getting around in Durham is pretty easy too. Not only is the city easy to navigate around, but for a small city there are also many transport links to areas all around the country.

The train station is just a short walk from the city centre and most of our student properties. It has links all over the country to places like London, Edinburgh and Manchester so getting home to your family will be no problems.
